 the Creek

Saturday August 2nd was the bands performance at the end of the week long band camp. The band showed off how much they accomplished this week by doing both halftime and pregame something not accomplished before during band camp! They played the music of yes while marching into cool and challenging sets in their band camp t-shirts. After the performance the seniors gave out their awards to the band that were clever and funny.

Swartz Creek Dragons Marching Band Ends Season With Food and Fellowship.

The 2007 Swartz Creek Dragons Marching Band started together in the hot August days of band camp. Those that survived won the right to march and play during the home halftime shows of the Varsity football games and attend the band banquet. At the banquet held at the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church the 2007 DMB were honored for their hard work and accomplishments during this marching season. The menu for this event was no less impressive than the music and marching with tossed salad, fresh fruit, relish tray, bread and rolls, corn, green beans, baked potato, mostcholli, ham and roast beef. Not surprisingly band members like to eat. Band directors John Michailo and Jean Murdock acted as masters of ceremony at the event and Jeff Wisenbaugh was introduced as the new band boosters president. Senior field commander Nathan Irby gave a heartfelt address thanking those who have made the 2007 DMB a success and charging the underclassmen to continue the tradition. Addresses were also made by junior field commander Jeff Wisenbaugh III and sophomore field commander Joe Chapman. Each member of the band was recognized and awarded their respective year bar. For most of the seniors their fourth year bar was symbolic of 7 years of band starting back in the 6th grade at middle school. A number of awards were presented to both individual band members as well as whole sections. Not to be left out the band directors each received gift bags from the band. While Mrs. Murdock will be enjoying hot cups of java Mr. Michailo will be having no shortage of fresh ties to display, one that even plays a tune. Congratulations to the 2007 Swartz Creek Dragons Marching Band for a wonderful season of music and parade.

Summer Slips Away As Swartz Creek Marching Band Camp Gets Ready for Fall.

Last week Band Camp for Swartz Creek High School's Marching band got under way. This years show? Get the Led out!, the music of Led Zeppelin. Under the direction of Mr. John Michailo and Mrs. Jean Murdock returning members and new freshman found themselves on the field at the Swartz creek Middle School for a week long session of practice. Students started each morning at 8AM and worked all day until well past 8PM. Not only learning music and an array of new marching steps but dealing with heat and sun this years marching band is proving they have what it takes to deliver a bang up series of half-time shows this fall on the grid-iron. The week concluded with a demonstration performance Saturday at 1 PM in the High School Stadium where they showed off a variety of tunes and steps indicative of their hard work all week. From old regulars like Fearless Dragons, Eat'em up, and the National Anthem to the music of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven and others the band put on an excellent show for a grand stand filled with friends, family and staff. After the show this years senior class hosted an assortment of made up awards to there fellow lower classmen that among a long list of others included the infamous "Oh look I've dropped my quarter" award and "Best hat at Band Camp". The awards were inspired by actions and events shared among students throughout the week. Even Mr. Michailo the band director received and award from the seniors although this was more of a way to lure him from the safety of the press box to be silly stringed by the seniors. With the awards concluded the last official action of band camp got under way as the time honored tradition of pelting the underclassmen with water balloons and super soakers provided some light hearted relief from the heat. Most noted during this wet barrage was junior field commander Jeffery Wisenbaugh II who unflinching remained at attention while being soaked to the skin by senior field commander Nathan Irby. We wish to congratulate the 2007-2008 Swartz Creek High School Dragons Marching Band for a wonderful show and all of their hard work during band camp and look forward to watching them at the home games this fall.

Here they are! The Marching Band Banquet Photos!

Band Banquet a Night of Fun.

The Swartz Creek Dragons Marching Band held its annual banquet Friday night in the Johnson Center at the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church. Beginning at 6:30pm students, parents, band directors and band boosters packed into the Center to find a festive atmosphere of good food and beautifully decorated tables. After the hearty meal the awards ceremony began. Each student received their respective 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th year pin narrated by Mr. Michailo and presented by Mrs. Murdock. Awards were given for Most Improved Marcher / Player, Most Outstanding Marcher / Player, Most Improved Section and Most Outstanding Section. While these are the fun awards the Marching band also presented two awards given on a more serious note. These are awards presented in memorial of Swartz Creek students who passed away before their full potential in high school could be realized. The Kathe Shelly Memorial Award for Most Outstanding Color guard was presented to Miss Kathy Tylus and the Jason Johnson Memorial Spirit Award was a split presentation to both Miss Whitney Fornari and Miss Amelia Germain. The students then presented their gifts to the band directors in remembrance of the times they have shared this year. With the final award presentation closing remarks were heard from Miss Whitney Fornari (senior field commander), Mr. Nathan Irby (junior field commander) and Mr. Jeffery Wisenbaugh II ( Sophomore field commander). The evening closed with what was described by Mrs. Murdock as Mr. Michailo's favorite part, the cutting of the cake. Having attended this celebration it was plain to see everyone had enjoyed an evening to remember.

Pep Band keeps Dragon Spirits High at Basketball Games

The Swartz Creek Pep Band inspires players and fans alike at our home Dragon basketball games. If you haven't had heard them yet come out to one of the home games. There really is nothing like hearing this excellent group of young musicians play Trilogy as the Varsity Boys Basketball team enters the gym. It's electrifying. It just kind of makes you tingle all over and you know you are in for great night of basketball. The pep band is under the direction of Mrs. Murrdock  for Tuesday night games and Mr. John Michialo on Fridays. Given the level of excellence in the performance of the musical entertainment at the games I would have to say that Swartz Creek is leading the metro league in overall quality of of the game experience. Come to a game and hear what you've been missing.
