Swartz Creek Boys Basketball Diane L. Green Photography LLC in Swartz Creek Announces 2009 Senior Model Search Diane L. Green Photography LLC of Swartz Creek my want you. For the first time their photography studio is providing an open senior modeling competition to area high school juniors of the the 2007-2008 school year. Previously the studio had invited only students they knew personally to participate. Diane explains " This year we have had a great deal of interest from parents and seniors about how we choose our models for advertising. While we are local to Swartz Creek and have concentrated our advertising and service on the Swartz Creek community we have had seniors from Grand Blanc, Linden, Bentley, Kearsley, Flushing, Mt. Morris, Durand, Flint, Carmen-Ainsworth and Fenton this year. It was very surprising since we hadn't advertised in any of those areas directly. As we are seeing students from those schools we wanted to include them as well. The idea of a model search just seemed logical. We have had a lot of fun and success photographing this years models at Dow Gardens and Mackinac Island. We have already planned next years locations at Dow Gardens, Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, Grand Haven and down town Chicago." Students interested in becoming a model for the studio must have parental consent, and submit an application (available at their website) along with one head and shoulder and one full length snap shot. "We are looking for a cross-section of students for our 2009 advertising that represent the many different styles students express today." If you are interested in becoming a senior model for the studio you can visit their website at www.dg-pics.com/seniors.html or contact the studio by phone at 810-496-3498.
Swartz Creek Faculty take on the WJRT TV12 No-Stars. Saturday night March 31st the sounds of hoop shots once again filled the Swartz Creek High School gym as the Swartz Creek Faculty squared off against the WJRT TV12 No Stars. This game was sponsored by the Freshman class of 2010 as a fund raiser and judging by the turnout the class has done well. Teachers from across to district showed up to show off their style and swish the net while TV12's team featured a wide range of players from on air personalities of Joel Feick, J. R. Kirtek and Kevin Goff to a couple of pint size players with shots of their own. While this game may have started off looking like a basketball game with Swartz Creek winning the tip it became clear that high jinks were afoot as J. R. Kirtik and Kevin Goff posed for a photo op in the middle of play. With shots from the stands, backward freethrows, fans and cheerleaders making shots during regulation play even the ref's got into the act attempting to make a shot here and there for TV12's team. Ken Szmansky attempting to remedy the ref's involvement with TV12's team made a quick arrest and hand cuffed Mark Grantham to a chair, Mark was forced to ref the next few moments of the game carrying the folding furniture up and down the court. In general I think you can say a good time was had by all. Even Swartz Creek boy's varsity player Ben Cummings managed to make an appearance on the floor for part of the game. Oh the score? Swartz Creek 50 TV12 No Stars 30 but I guess that really isn't the point. Congratulations to the Class of 2010 for a fun night and a successful fund raiser.
Basketball Banquet By: Krista Reaves
Varsity Basketball Coach Eric Senter gave a strong message at Thursday’s basketball banquet; he said the basketball program at Swartz Creek has finally evolved into a true program. “Thank you to all of the players, your hard work, dedication, loyalty and pursuit of excellence has turned this basketball program here at Swartz Creek into something to be proud of,” he said. Along with thanking the basketball players at the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels, Coach Senter thanked the players’ parents, the Swartz Creek Athletic Boosters, athletic trainer Jason Kish and the entire basketball coaching staff. He also thanked the wives and girlfriends of the coaches for their continuous support and patience throughout the season. “It’s a long season and we put in a lot of hours as coaches and I really appreciate the wives and girlfriends of the coaches for putting up with it,” he said. Freshman Basketball Coach Aaron O’Brian, whose team was crowned co-champs of the Metro League, said he was proud to say he was a part of the program. Coach O’Brian’s freshmen finished with a 16-4 record and were undefeated at home. “It’s pretty impressive to have a group of freshmen do something like this, I’m already looking forward to next year, it’s the kids you coach that keep you coming back year after year,” he said. Junior Varsity Basketball Coach Tom Ureche, whose team finished with a 15-5 record said, “If I could have a season like that for every year the rest of my life, I’d be very pleased.” Ureche said he was also proud of all of the basketball players for the community service project they participated in during their season. Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach Mike Jewell said he has a special connection to this year’s graduating seniors, Trevor L’hommedeiu, Ray Reaves and Ben Cummings because he has coached them since they were seventh graders on the middle school basketball team. “This is the most fun we’ve had as coaches. The way these young men represent their school, community and families is wonderful and I believe the kids are proud to wear their Swartz Creek Jerseys,” he said in an emotion filled speech. Nearing the conclusion of the banquet Senter spoke again and said he was proud that his players had a “winning mentality” this year. “When we stepped out on that floor every game, even though we were always the smaller team, we believed we could beat anybody,” he said. Senter recalled many memories from the season, including Robbie Johnson eating 16 slices of pizza, Reaves spilling his drink at Pizza Hut and the first time Ryan Patton started in a varsity game. With emotion in his voice, Senter called each player up individually and gave very personal speeches about each of his players. He became very emotional while announcing the senior line-up. He gave each of his players their respective awards for the season, including varsity letters, academic awards and iron man awards for attending every practice and game. Coach Senter awarded senior Matt Holmes with the Coach’s Award citing Holmes’ outstanding attitude and determination. Ryan Patton was given the award for Most Improved. Senter also announced that Russel Hope was given honorable mention in the Metro League, Reaves was awarded Third Team All League, Cummings received Second Team All League and that L’Hommedieu was unanimously awarded First Team All League. L’Hommedieu is the second leading scorer in Swartz Creek history but Senter said he truly believes that he could actually be the best player to ever come through the basketball program at Swartz Creek. At the conclusion of the banquet Coach Senter called upon each of the younger players to step up their game and to get ready for next season. He said he believed they were all up for the challenge and asked for them to build upon the success of this year’s team.
Thanks for the memories seniors! Ryan Patton Robbie Johnson Ryan Patton Matt Holmes Ben Cummings Ray Reaves Trevor L’Hommedeau
Clio Mustangs Fall to the Sweep of the Dragons. Tuesday night February 20th the Swartz Creek gym was filled with the throng of fans as the Dragons delivered another clean sweep of victories over rival Clio. The Freshman team lead the way with what can only be described as a blow out. The Clio Freshman fell by the wayside as the Dragons quickly established their familiar lead at the beginning and continued to pound away through 4 periods. When the tally of hoops came in Swartz Creek posted an impressive 83 points over Clio's 36. Great way to go Dragons.
Following the Freshman Tuesday night the JV hit the hardwood for their opportunity to take on the Clio challengers. Again Swartz Creek gained the upper hand right from the outset and steadily built their lead over the Mustangs. The JV team displayed all of the skills Coach Tom Ureche and Assistant Coach John Sullivan have been teaching all season. Speed, accuracy, precision and teamwork combined to provide the JV team with the win they were looking for. With a final JV score of Swartz Creek 66 Clio 34 the stage was set for a clean sweep in the gym by the Varsity.
Ben Cummings, Ray Reaves, Trevor L'Hammedieu, Russel Hope and CJ Studer composed the starting lineup for the Dragons. As play got under way the Dragons and fans were joined by the crew from Comcast as the Varsity game was recorded for broadcast on Comcast channel 70. The pressure was on for both teams to perform well as the cameras caught the highlights in living color. As each team scrambled for control of the orange globe the Dragons made their now familiar first score. From that simple beginning the team built their lead steadily while holding off the advance of the Mustangs. By the end of the first period Swartz Creek held a 6 point advantage over Clio with a score of 19 to 13 and by the half Clio was down 24 points with a score of 42 to 18. After a excellent and entertaining performance set by both the Varsity Cheerleaders and Pom Squad the teams returned. Clio came on strong in the third fired up during half time to deliver 24 more points to their score only to find Swartz Creek up to the challenge to meet them point for point. By the end of the third Clio still trailed 34 to Swartz Creek's 54. While Clio was able in the forth to add another 20 points the Dragons paced themselves adding 9. At the sound of the final buzzer Swartz Creek Varsity had clenched yet another victory with a final score of Swartz Creek 63 Clio 54 and finished another Dragons clean sweep. Go Dragons!
Dragons Tame Tigers! The Swartz Creek Varsity Boys Basketball team added another win Tuesday night to an already impressive list of victories. The Fenton Tigers came to the gym to engage the mighty Dragons in a battle of hoops on the hardwood. While the weather may not have cooperated serving up low temperatures and blowing snow to keep many from attending this match up, the gym was warm and the fans fired up in support of our Dragons. From the first tip off the Dragons started a fast paced game building a commanding lead over the Tigers. The first period was in the dragons favor all the way with the Fenton Tigers looking more like a bunch of cats waking up from a nap than a basketball team. For all four periods it was clear Creek would hold the lead and cage the Tigers. Ben Cummings, Ray Reaves, Trevor L'Hommedieu and Ryan Patton not only provided great examples of Creeks domination of the court but also provided some stunning athletic moments captured in photos during this game. Final score for the Dragons 61 to the sleeping Tigers 38. Great Game Guys! Go Creek!
Dragons Freeze out Hornets in Yet Another Swartz Creek Clean Sweep. The Coming Home Banners made by the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Seniors classes hung over the stage in the High School gym predicting exactly what was about to happen. In Three successive games Swartz Creeks Dragons shut down Kearsley's teams and froze out the Hornets for another familiar Dragon Clean Sweep. The Freshman team closed out their game with a 67 to 55 victory. Inspired by the Freshman the JV team shut down Kearsley with 65 to 51 win setting up the Varsity for a clean sweep. The Varsity team made the hat trick by a 16 point lead finishing their game 73 to the Hornets 57. Congratulations go to the teams and their coaches for games well played and well won. Go Dragons.
Varsity defeat Kearsely; Coming Home King Crowned By: Krista Reaves
Swartz Creek fans were packed into the home bleachers Friday night for the annual Coming Home celebration where the varsity Dragons defeated the Kearsley Hornets, 73-57. Ben Cummings came up big for Swartz Creek with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Trevor L’Hommedieu added 11 points, six official assits and exceptional passes throughout the game. Sophomore Phillip Lougheed made his first varsity appearance, coming up from the JV squad and contributed 10 points to the final score. Matt Holmes finished with 11 points, including two three-point baskets. Ethan Brouwer and Ray Reaves each had six points, Reaves with one three-pointer. CJ Studer and Brandon Jacobs rounded out the score with four points each and Russel Hope added two points. The defeat was largely a team effort by the Dragons, with each player receiving quality minutes. The non-league win against Kearsley gives Swartz Creek a 3-1 record against Big Nine competition. T he Dragons are 6-2 in the Metro League, putting them in second place behind the Lapeer West Panthers. Creek won against Lapeer West in their meeting earlier in the season and will have the chance to put themselves only ˝ game behind the Panthers if they pull off a win this Tuesday when they visit Lapeer West for the second and final meeting of regular season play. Many consider this a must-win game if the Dragons want to hold on to their goal of winning the Metro League. Along with exciting basketball play Friday, halftime was a show in itself. Although the pom squad was in Disney World competing at nationals, the cheerleaders gave an excellent halftime performance. The Coming Home court consisted of three princes from each of the freshman, sophomore and junior classes and five senior princes including, Wassim Abousamra, Ben Cummings, Adam Edwards, Adam Meyer and Ray Reaves. All princes were escorted onto the basketball court by their mothers. Adam Meyers was crowned Coming Home King by the former king and 2006 Homecoming Queen Sydnee Adams.
Dragons send Eagles back to the Nest. The Swartz Creek JV and Varsity boys basketball teams took the show on the road Tuesday night in games against Linden, at Linden. While we all may remember the narrow last moment victory Linden pulled out of a hat at this falls Varsity football game, basketball is another story. This time one Linden would probably like to forget. The JV and Varsity Dragons worked there regular B-ball magic on Lindens hardwood floors. The JV started off right from the onset building a lead over the Eagles that our boys just never seem to let the other team get back. The final JV toll Swartz Creek 64 Linden 43. But the JV victory was just the warm up act for the main event. Setting the stage for the Varsity team to display a little hoop magic of their own. While the football game may have been on the edge of your seat, go for broke nail biter. The Basketball game the Varsity played was in Swartz Creek's favor all the way. From the tip off to the final buzzer in the fourth period the Dragons came up with a lead and simply widened it. If the Eagles had any thought of pulling this game out in the 3rd the Dragons crushed it in the fourth finishing with a final score Dragons 57 Eagles 39. Way to make it a night Swartz Creek.
Dragons down Blackhawks 3 games in a row. Swartz Creek boys basketball continues to show the powerhouse teams for what they are. The Swartz Creek High School gym is being kept clean as our Dragons having made another clean sweep of a visiting team. The Brandon Blackhawks played the Dragons and to no surprise to anyone in Swartz Creek were defeated in all 3 games. The Freshman team preformed an excellent job of gaining the upper hand and building a commanding lead to finish their game 70 to Brandon's 34 points. With the Freshman opening the door the JV showed the same spirit by downing the Blackhawks 76 to 47. As the Varsity team reached the floor the level of play increased. Brandon made a good showing for themselves but to no avail. The Varsity team closed the door on any chances of a Brandon win. Varsity ended the clean sweep of Brandon's teams with a victory. Swartz Creek 72 Brandon 63.
Swartz Creek doing well in Fenton. Friday night January 12th, 2007 the Swartz Creek Dragons Basketball teams showed up in the Fenton gym for a night of fast paced play. While many of the teams we have played in the recent weeks have had their moments of fast paced action, pass interceptions and reversals of play, Friday nights games for the Freshman, JV and Varsity teams were a non-stop extravaganza of action. Both Swartz Creek and Fenton have games to bring to the floor. Our Freshman team did well winning their game 69 to Fenton's 63. The Freshman played a game of speed, endurance and strategy matching and exceeding Fenton's plays to pull ahead and maintain a narrow lead until the final buzzer. Congratulations to our Freshman.
While the final score for the JV team may not have been in favor of Swartz Creek, the JV team should be given credit in holding off Fenton's attack. Both teams played a hard fast paced game with pass interceptions reversing the direction of play a number times, rushing the ball handler and just great shooting. Judging by the outcome of this game over last years Freshman encounter it is clear that our Swartz Creek team has acquired and refined skills against Fenton. Keep up the good work guys.
Swartz Creek Varsity got off to its usual start being first to score against Fenton. However the level of play between these two teams was anything but ordinary. During the first quarter a rapid reversal of fortune left Swartz Creek down and trailing. Being quick to rally the Varsity snatched the lead back and the race was on. Fast paced play, high pressure and speed best describe these two teams, as neither looked willing to accept 2nd place. Fans from both sides added to this highly charged atmosphere with the student sections from both sides exchanging cheers and cat calls across the floor. Parents, students, players, faculty and staff looked on as our Dragons forged out points and held the Tigers to a spread that had narrowed to just 4 points by the last minute and a half of the last period. In these last 90 seconds of play this truly could have been anyone's ball game but then again not just anyone was playing. The Dragons know how to get things done and the Varsity proved it as the clock ticked down to a Dragon victory of 64 to Fenton's 54. Great game Varsity. Well played, well won. Go Creek! Creek keeps the gym tidy with another clean sweep. Last Friday night January 5th our fearless Dragon basketball teams stepped onto the court for the first time since returning from winter break. The questions on everyone's mind was how well would our boys do after a long rest and all those big holiday meals. In rapid succession our boys answered that question in no uncertain terms by delivering a clean sweep of the Lapeer West Panthers. From the start of the Freshman game through the final buzzer of the Varsity game Swartz Creek showed they were ready, willing and able to play ball and provide victories to the fans who had gathered for spirited games of basketball. While the Freshman had started this sweep off with a win of 62 to 57 the JV team stomped on the Panthers tail with a win of 60 to the Panthers 29. With the stage set by these two wins the Varsity team continued the winning streak with a win of 70-60 to complete a clean sweep of Lapeer West. Well done Swartz Creek. Keep up the great play.

JV show their moves during play against Lapeer West.
The Dragons hang on to defeat Lapeer West 70-60. By: Krista Reaves
The Swartz Creek boys held on tight in their Metro League opener as Lapeer West tried to overcome the Dragon’s 20 point lead in Friday night’s home game where the hometown team defeated the Panthers 70-60. The packed Swartz Creek section was electric with excitement for the first game after the long holiday break and the dragon’s first Metro League appearance. Many considered the game to be a preview of how the team would perform in the league, after big wins against Big 9 powerhouses Grand Blanc and Davison at the start of the season. Both teams came out fighting in the first quarter, but the Dragons pulled ahead 18-15 to end the quarter and never looked back. Swartz Creek led 39-24 at halftime and with about four minutes left in the third quarter, they led 47-27. Just when it looked like Swartz Creek had the game in the bag, Lapeer West made a run on the Dragons and with less than five minutes left in the game, the panthers were within six points of the Creek. The Swartz Creek fans appeared anxious as they watched the boys from Lapeer hack away at the Dragons lead. With just a couple of minutes left on the clock the panthers began fouling Swartz Creek, sending Russel Hope, Trevor L’Hommedieu and Ben Cummings to the free throw line. The Dragons shot well from the line and clenched their victory, giving much relief to the on-edge Creek fans. Swartz Creek was led by senior Trevor L’Hommedieu with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Cummings had 16 points and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line while Ray Reaves added 7 points, including a three-point basket. Ethan Brouwer, Jordan Dieck, Russel Hope and Matt Holmes each finished with six points, Holmes with two three-pointers. Brandon Jocobs added three points to the Dragon’s total. Jerry Davis, 15-year Metro League basketball fan said he thought the game was great and was surprised with the huge momentum change in the third quarter. “It is important for Creek to be able to grind out a victory against a quality team like Lapeer West,” he said. Davis said he thought some key saves, rebounds and put-backs by Cummings made a big difference in the game and he said he likes the Dragon’s chances in the Metro League. “They are as good as anybody in the league, but there are a lot of games left to be played,” he said. After the game, L’Hommedieu said he was somewhat worried as the panthers began chipping away at their lead. “We need to play a lot better than we played tonight if we want to win the Metro League,” he said. Swart Creek fan Mark Zyber said he thought Swartz Creek played a good game, although he did get nervous as the panthers moved in on the dragon’s lead. He said he thinks the Dragons will do very well in the Metro League. “They are a really good team. They play tough defense, they box out and they are good from the free throw line. They have the fundamentals down and they are kids with heart who play as a team, which could get them very far in the Metro,” Zyber said. The dragons will face the undefeated Eagles from Lapeer East this Tuesday at home.
Highlights of the Varsity game between Swartz Creek and Lapeer West. Swartz Creek Clean Sweeps Davison. The Swartz Creek Basket Ball Season is well under way and if the game against Davison is any indication our boys have taken a cue from the girls. The Swartz Creek High School gym was once again filled with the sound of fans a one by one the Freshman, JV and Varsity Boy's Basketball teams defeated Davison for a clean sweep. Looks like the girls aren't the only ones who know how to clean house. Highlights from each of the three games can be seen below. Great jobs well done by a great set of Swartz Creek Dragon teams. Go Creek.
Highlights of the Freshman game. Nice job team. A game well played.
